How Bitcoin escrow works, and how to verify it yourself

Escrow is what makes it safe for two strangers to trade crypto against a bank transfer: the coins sit where neither side can grab them until the money side settles. The useful part is that with Bitcoin you do not have to take anyone's word for it. You can watch the escrow on-chain.

The sequence of a protected trade

First, the seller sends coins to a dedicated deposit address created for that order. Second, both sides can see the funding transaction confirm on any block explorer; nothing is invisible. Third, the buyer sends the bank transfer. Only when the transfer has actually settled are the coins released to the buyer; if the trade falls through, they go back to the seller's return address. The escrow address is the single source of truth for the whole trade.

How to verify instead of trust

Take the deposit address from your order page and paste it into a block explorer such as mempool.space. You should see exactly your deposit, with confirmations counting up, and no outgoing spend while the trade is open. If a platform cannot show you a per-order address, or coins move before settlement, walk away. The same check works in reverse for buyers: you can see the coins are real and in place before you send a cent.

What escrow does not cover

Escrow protects the crypto leg, not the bank leg. A bank transfer can be disputed or recalled in ways a Bitcoin transaction cannot, which is why the release happens only after the money has genuinely settled, not when a screenshot says it was sent. It also does not replace judgment: keep the whole conversation inside the order chat, never settle outside the platform, and be suspicious of any counterparty who wants to move faster than the bank does.

Escrow without an account

None of this requires an identity upload. The protections are cryptographic and procedural, not bureaucratic, which is why a no-KYC trade can still be a safe trade. If you want to see it in practice, open a sell order or read how you are protected on Satpeer, and check the timing side in our SEPA Instant guide.
